Background about Oxfam in Uganda
Oxfam is a global movement for change that empowers people to create a secure future, just and free from poverty and injustice. We believe all lives are equal. No one should be discriminated against or live-in poverty. We want a world in which everyone can safely speak truth to power, claim their human rights, and build a better future for themselves. We recognize that we cannot achieve this on our own but as a collective power. We, therefore, work in partnership with local and grass-root organisations, civil society, individuals, volunteers, the private sector, and the Government.
In Uganda, Oxfam started in the 1960’s and continues with a Vision of a Uganda free of inequality and Injustice: A society where people, particularly women and young people, claim and exercise their rights and responsibilities and influence decisions that affect their lives. Our work is guided by the Country Strategic Framework (CSF) (2021-2030), organised around four themes: Governance and Accountability, Resilient Livelihoods, Humanitarian preparedness and response and Gender Justice and Women's Rights. To contribute to change that lasts, we mobilize to transform the systems, policies and practices that significantly impact people’s lives.
About the convening
Oxfam Uganda in collaboration with Horn East and Central Africa regional platform and partners are is convening a climate change and gender justice meeting for young feminists and activists in Horn East and Central Africa. This event is scheduled to take place from the 24th of August to the 26th of August 2022 in Kampala, Uganda at a hotel yet to be confirmed.
Oxfam acknowledges the important role of young women as agents of change in the International Climate change national, regional, and global discourse. This was evident during the event and the call to action made during the climax of the 66th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in Africa. All actors recognized the contribution of women and girls around the world, leading collective and individual actions on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.
This convening will contribute to the global conversations on the inclusion of young people and the feminist position on ‘No climate justice without gender justice’ and Sustainable Development Goal 5,13 and Africa’s Agenda 2063 goals. The convening will create a safe space for discussion of the interlinkages between climate change gender justice and feminism.
The meeting feeds into the UN Climate Change Conference, COP 27, which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from 7 to 18 November 2022. The COP 27 will focus on the implementation and delivery on global commitments bridging gaps, towards mitigation, adaptation, and climate financing for development. Embedded herein is the concept note for more information.
Who will be attending? About 50 participants will physically be present for the convening. These will include young feminists/activists and other participants from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, DRC, South Sudan, and Somalia.
Objectives of the convening
