In the heart of Katikekile, a remote sub-county in Moroto district, Lokut Raphael and Kachinga Halima's relationship was once on the brink of collapse, consumed by Lokut's debilitating alcoholism. However, a life-changing intervention through the GALS (Gender Action Learning System) methodology.
facilitated by the National Association of Women in Uganda (NAWOU), has transformed this once-troubled couple into a pillar of light to their entire community.
Lokut's journey to redemption was a volatile one. Before the GALS training, he had been a self-proclaimed "wasted person," the secretary of a group of drunkards. His alcoholism had cost him five previous relationships, and he had resigned himself to the belief that no woman could tolerate a man like him. Yet, fate had a different plan in store for Lokut, as he found himself in his sixth relationship with Kachinga.
"Before NAWOU came and trained us on the GALS methodology, I was a mess," Lokut recounts, his voice laced with a hint of shame. "Drinking was the order of the day, and I was so thin that even my friends wondered how I managed to gain weight. Instead of beating my wife every day at home, I am now planning on creating home projects for her that will keep her busy and help her earn money."
The GALS approach, which uses participatory processes and visual diagram tools, empowered Lokut and Kachinga to renegotiate their roles and responsibilities within the household. This innovative methodology, aimed at promoting inclusion and gender justice, has had a profound impact on their relationship.
"The sense of unity, understanding, and togetherness is evident in our home," Lokut proudly declares. "The love for each other continues to grow through sweet communications and words of affirmation." The couple has now become role models in their community, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
Lokut's transformation extends beyond the confines of his household. He has emerged as a change agent, determined to inspire his entire community. "Change should not only end with me," he asserts.
"People in my community should be inspired by my example and strive to emulate the positive changes I have achieved. "The once-troubled man has emerged as a devoted husband, a role model, and an inspirational model for all who witness his remarkable journey from the depths of alcoholism to the heights of a harmonious and fulfilling partnership.
The GALS methodology has proven to be a transformative force, not only in the lives of Lokut and Kachinga but also in the broader community.
By fostering gender equity and empowering individuals to negotiate their needs and interests, this approach has paved the way for a more just and inclusive society, where the bonds of love and mutual understanding transcend the boundaries of traditional gender roles.
